The Log Cabin Republicans announced Friday that the organization will no longer advocate for transgender issues, rebranding itself as an “LGB” organization. The group, which champions lesbian, gay, and bisexual conservatives and their allies, voted to remove transgender advocacy from its mission after more than a decade.

Ross Hemminger, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, stated in an op-ed that the shift was prompted by the transgender rights movement's perceived focus on minors. "At the time, we did not believe that we would find ourselves where we are today," Hemminger wrote. "The transgender movement has ceased focusing on adults at all — nearly all of their efforts and those of their aligned special interest groups focus on minors."

Hemminger cited concerns that the movement pushes "radical gender ideology" in schools, advocates for biological males in women's sports, and supports gender reassignment treatments for minors without parental knowledge or consent, which he described as often irreversible.

He expressed that this "new era of gender identity politics is not the movement we supported and fought for" and suggested it has contributed to waning public interest in gay and lesbian issues. The organization’s board of directors has voted to "concentrate specifically on issues of sexual orientation and conservative values — in other words, we are an LGB advocacy organization."

The Log Cabin Republicans plan to focus on issues related to marriage, adoption, military service, equal treatment under the law, and religious liberty. "This decision reaffirms our core mission," Hemminger stated. "We have fought for the right to marry who we love, serve our country openly and enjoy the same rights afforded to all Americans. Returning to our roots means recommitting ourselves to the principles and disciplined advocacy that got us this far."

The group's membership policy will remain open to all conservatives, regardless of the mission change. The Log Cabin Republicans, who endorsed President Trump in the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections, previously added transgender issues to their umbrella in 2015. Trump has previously taken stances against sex changes for minors, transgender athletes in women's sports, and sought to ban transgender service members from the military.
