LeBron James has revealed that his nearly 12-year-old daughter, Zhuri, is playing a significant role in his upcoming free agency decision. James, who is 41 and has completed 23 NBA seasons, stated that his family's well-being, particularly Zhuri's, is a major factor in his choice for the 2026-27 season.
"It’s my almost 12-year-old daughter who is pulling the weight a lot," James said during a conversation at Fanatics Fest. He explained that he informed Zhuri directly that he would not be playing for the Lakers next year and would be elsewhere, potentially away from home more often. He asked for her feelings on the matter, emphasizing her importance to him.
Zhuri has resided in Los Angeles since she was a preschooler, where she has established friendships and is developing as a volleyball player. Uprooting her from her current environment is a considerable consideration for James. His wife, Savannah, and his sons, Bronny (21) and Bryce (19), are also factors, but James noted that Zhuri's routine and social connections weigh heavily on his decision.
James has expressed a desire to remain close to his family, suggesting that playing on the East Coast, which would involve a five-hour flight from Los Angeles, is less likely. While his potential destinations include Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Philadelphia, and Minnesota, the proximity to his daughter appears to be a guiding principle.
He recalled a conversation on July 4th where he told Zhuri he wouldn't be with the Lakers next season. He presented her with the option to respond immediately or to take time to consider, underscoring her significant influence. James has long been committed to fatherhood, having vowed to be different from his own absent father.
His career aspirations include winning a fifth championship and enjoying his teammates during the later stages of his career. However, he stressed that the decision extends beyond basketball, focusing on his overall happiness, which is closely linked to being near his daughter.
James has shared specific moments highlighting his bond with Zhuri, including a father-daughter trip to San Francisco when the Lakers played the Warriors. During this trip, Zhuri participated in warm-ups on the court, showcasing her own basketball skills, and shared a high-five with her father. James described this experience as having "softened" him, noting the "different type of love" involved in being a father to a daughter.
In a Father's Day message, Zhuri acknowledged her father's steady presence and support. James has hinted that the upcoming season may not be his last, but his focus remains on making a choice that balances his professional ambitions with his personal commitment to his family, particularly Zhuri. The possibility of playing for the Golden State Warriors has been suggested as a potential fit that could allow him to remain close to his family in California, with a short flight to Los Angeles.
