Learner drivers are currently facing an average wait of 20 weeks to book a practical driving test, according to recent data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). While this represents a marginal improvement from the 20.2-week average recorded in July, it remains significantly longer than initially intended. Maze of Delays The time between booking and actually taking the test has remained static at 11.1 weeks. The DVSA had previously set a target to reduce average waiting times to seven weeks by the end of the past year. However, this goal has been repeatedly pushed back. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander revised the target to summer 2026, but later admitted that even this revised timeline might not be achievable.
Efforts to alleviate the backlog have included bringing in additional examiners and increasing test center capacity. Despite these measures, the prolonged waiting periods continue to affect learner drivers across the country, potentially delaying their ability to gain independence and enter the workforce. The persistent delays have led to frustration among driving instructors and students alike. The inability to book tests in a timely manner can disrupt learning schedules and add financial strain as learners may need additional lessons to maintain their skills during the extended waiting periods. The DVSA has stated that it is committed to addressing the backlog and improving the booking system. However, the scale of the challenge suggests that a return to pre-pandemic waiting times will be a gradual process.
