Actress Laura Vandervoort has spoken out about the distressing experience of being informed of her miscarriage in front of other people. Vandervoort, 41, revealed on Instagram that she suffered a pregnancy loss in April, sharing that her baby's heart had stopped. She described the moment she and her husband, Adam Coates, received the news in an emergency room waiting area as "traumatizing."
"Our visit to the emergency room that day was made even more traumatizing by a doctor who told us our baby's heart had stopped in front of an entire waiting room of people," Vandervoort wrote on the social media platform. She detailed how the loss, which occurred at 11 weeks of pregnancy, has been a significant challenge, with ongoing emotional impact.
Vandervoort, who is married to Adam Coates, chief revenue officer of the Decibel Cannabis Company, expressed that miscarriage is a profound loss that often goes unacknowledged. She noted the difficulty of moving forward while experiencing such a significant personal event. "Every week I know how far along I would have been," she stated, adding that "every pregnancy announcement stabs in ways I wish it wouldn't."
She encouraged greater openness about miscarriage, stating that the experience, while common, can feel isolating. "I wish more people would have discussions about this as it's incredibly common yet at the time we felt very isolated in the experience. Keep the conversations going," she urged.
Vandervoort is widely recognized for her role in the television series Smallville. She has also appeared in V, Instant Star, Haven, Supergirl, and the Netflix series V Wars.
