Labor MP Ed Husic has broken his silence following a severe car crash that left him hospitalized with a fractured vertebra and concussion. Husic was driving home from his electorate office on Tuesday evening when his Tesla was involved in a three-vehicle collision with a B-double truck and a Mazda ute on Sydney's M7 motorway.
The crash occurred around 6:20 p.m. Husic told the Daily Telegraph that he has no memory of the incident and is currently on two weeks of medical leave. The truck is believed to have impacted the rear-right side of Husic's vehicle while traveling at approximately 80 km/h. Husic's office stated that he was not at fault for the collision.
Paramedics attended to Husic at the scene before he was transported to Westmead Hospital. He was discharged on Wednesday but continues to experience pain and memory loss related to the crash. Husic described pain in his upper back, with a new fracture in a vertebra, and stiffness in his neck, which has been eased by physiotherapy. He also experienced significant pain in his legs above the knees, potentially from airbag deployment or impact with the dashboard, which has since subsided.
This incident comes weeks after Husic became a prominent voice within the Labor party advocating for a stronger stance on the war in Gaza. He had urged the party to formally recognize what he termed a genocide in Gaza, applying pressure on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and highlighting internal party divisions. The party conference ultimately adopted a position aligned with the federal government's existing approach, rejecting Husic's call for more forceful language.
Despite the conference outcome, Husic expressed his commitment to continuing internal discussions and remains dedicated to the Labor party. He stated that change sometimes requires difficult conversations to unite people. His injuries will prevent him from attending the upcoming parliamentary sitting week. Husic also voiced concerns about restrictions on debating proposed policy positions within the party.
