Former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has filed for divorce from her husband of over 34 years, Bryon Noem, according to South Dakota court filings.
Kristi Noem, who was fired by President Donald Trump in March, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the dissolution of their marriage. Her lawyer signed the divorce complaint in April, and it was filed with the Hamlin County court on Monday.
Under South Dakota law, the couple is subject to a temporary restraining order as a result of the divorce proceedings. Bryon Noem has not yet offered an immediate comment.
In a statement, Kristi Noem's attorney, Michael K. Sabers, said, "Kristi Noem has filed for the dissolution of her marriage to Bryon Noem. She has great faith in the South Dakota judicial system and will reserve any further comments for the legal process."
Kristi Noem and Bryon Noem were high school sweethearts, and she wrote about their courtship in her book. The couple has three children and multiple grandchildren. Bryon Noem was often present with Kristi Noem at public events and congressional testimony during her tenure as DHS secretary.
Earlier this year, the Daily Mail published reports alleging Bryon Noem had engaged in online exchanges with women and made payments to some, accompanied by photos of him in women's clothing. Kristi Noem and her chief adviser Corey Lewandowski, who was the subject of congressional inquiries regarding their relationship, have denied any romantic involvement.
Since her removal as DHS secretary, Kristi Noem was appointed by Trump to serve as the special envoy to the "Shield of Americas," a coalition between the United States and Latin American governments.
