King Charles reportedly kept Prince William and Kate Middleton unaware of a secret reunion with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. According to royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, citing sources, "not even the Prince and Princess of Wales were made aware that the meeting was taking place."

Nicholl reported that the King insisted on secrecy for the July 10 meeting, allowing only palace aides to confirm the reunion after the Sussexes departed Highgrove House, Charles' country home, unseen. Queen Camilla was also present for the hour-long meeting, which was described as "completely cloak-and-dagger, orchestrated by the king."

A source close to Charles told Nicholl that the meeting was "uncharacteristically last-minute for the king," and that everyone involved was "sworn to secrecy so that the meeting could remain private." Queen Camilla, who was staying at her own estate, reportedly drove to Highgrove in haste for the meeting, with a source indicating she was there for moral support and had dropped everything, telling no one. The source added that Camilla had been a "pillar of strength" for Charles throughout the family drama.

William and Kate were not present for the reunion. The Prince of Wales was participating in the DMI Royal Charity Polo Cup 2026 in Windsor at the time. Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner suggested Camilla may have encouraged Charles to support the meeting, provided no public discussion of the topics occurred. British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard commented that the King's dealings with the Sussexes are personal, not institutional, but suggested William would likely not be pleased about the private meeting, as he wishes to avoid the Sussexes' drama.

Experts suggest the estranged brothers' relationship remains significantly strained. A source who knows both princes told People magazine their relationship is "so broken," with no indication of movement toward reconciliation, particularly from William's side. There was no expectation that the brothers would meet during Harry's time in the U.K.

William's focus is on protecting his family and the monarchy he is set to inherit, according to royal experts. Kinsey Schofield, host of "Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered," stated that William is driven by caution rather than revenge and that he needs to see sustained evidence of changed behavior from Harry before considering reconciliation. Schofield added that William's priority is protecting Catherine and the institution, noting that repeated public criticisms have deeply affected him. She believes William's issue is not anger but a lack of trust, which requires a prolonged period of private conversations remaining confidential to rebuild.

Royal expert Hilary Fordwich noted the polarizing nature of the Sussexes' situation within the royal family, stating that William and Charles have "completely different outlooks." Another source close to the Sussexes told Nicholl that the couple had agreed to keep the meeting and its details entirely secret, a promise Harry made to his father. This was reportedly the first time the Sussexes had met the King in four years, and Harry was pleased it occurred.

Chard suggested that reconciliation without William's involvement may not be considered true family reconciliation and could hinder future healing due to thin trust and the optics of William being kept in the dark. Dan Wakeford, founder of Celebrity Intelligence, previously stated that William's door remains "bolted shut" to Harry, partly due to the hurt caused to Catherine by Harry's memoir, "Spare."
