Ukrainian center Kate Koval has announced her departure from the LSU women's basketball team, citing the program's decision to sign Russian player Anna Minaeva as a primary factor. Koval, who had initially intended to return for another season, stated that the acquisition of Minaeva, made after the transfer portal closed, led to her withdrawal from the team and LSU.
In a statement released on Instagram, Koval explained that her father's service in the Ukrainian Army and the personal impact of the war, including the deaths and injuries of friends and family, played a significant role in her decision. "The timing of this situation and the deeply personal effect it has had on me, my family, and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me," Koval wrote.
LSU head coach Kim Mulkey had previously stated that Koval's departure was due to "personal reasons." Mulkey, in response to the situation, indicated that she made the decision to recruit Minaeva based on what she believed would benefit the basketball program. Mulkey also reportedly suggested she had hoped Koval and Minaeva could serve as "ambassadors" for unity. "I cannot make a decision to not recruit somebody that can help our program because of a conflict between two countries," Mulkey said.
Koval expressed her hope that the NCAA will consider the circumstances surrounding her situation and grant her the opportunity to compete at another institution for the upcoming 2026-27 basketball season. Koval's statement came after initial inquiries to her and her representatives were directed to her public announcement.
