Charlie Hall, son of actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, will be joining the cast of the upcoming fourth season of HBO's "The White Lotus." Hall, 29, shared that his first call after learning of his casting was to his mother, who was with his father, former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Brad Hall.
"I told her I got it. She was with my dad, and I heard her put the phone down and talk to my dad, like, 'Charlie got it! He got it! He got it!'" Hall recounted. He believes his mother, known for her role in "Veep," tried to maintain a calm demeanor, though they were both "insanely stoked."
"They are excited for me to be on a show like that," Hall said, noting that "The White Lotus" is a favorite series of his parents. He added that he himself was trying to manage his excitement, explaining, "I was trying not to freak out. Especially because you never want to celebrate too much before you’ve done the work."
The actor acknowledged a degree of apprehension about the show's potentially mature or "raunchy" content, referencing a scene from Season 3 involving on-screen brothers. However, he expressed confidence in the series' creator, stating, "it’s such a wonderful show and White is such an amazing writer, that, as he put it, 'Whatever happens, happens.'"
While an official premiere date for "The White Lotus" Season 4 has not yet been announced, Hall teased that the new season, set in France, could be "really the best one yet." He described it as "very classic 'The White Lotus,'" with elements that are both humorous and realistic, featuring "some twists and turns along the way."
In addition to his role in "The White Lotus," Hall is currently appearing in the Apple TV+ dark comedy "Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed." In the series, he plays Rudy, a co-worker to the main character, Paula, a single mother entangled in a murder plot. Hall described the show's oscillating tone, which can shift between genuinely scary, thrilling, and funny.
"Rudy is the kind of guy that is always looking to joke around, and that’s definitely something that I’m always doing as well," Hall said of his character. "He’s looking to find the joke, and I’ve been doing that since I was like five years old, so that’s perfect."
Hall, whose parents are both comedians, did not always pursue acting professionally. He was passionate about basketball growing up, aiming for the NBA. "I eventually realized 'making the NBA is quite difficult' and then 'tried out the acting thing, and just fell in love with it,'" he said.
Before his current roles, Hall appeared in Ryan Murphy's "Monster" series on Netflix, in Season 2, "The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," and Season 3, "The Ed Gein Story." He expressed a strong desire to return for future seasons, feeling a "debt of gratitude" to Murphy and the production team for taking a chance on him in more serious roles.
New episodes of "Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed" are released Wednesdays on Apple TV.
