TEHRAN, Iran – Two members of the Islamic State group have been executed after being convicted of armed rebellion against Iran, state television reported Tuesday.

The individuals, identified as Mohieddin Abdollahi and Hossein Palani, were part of an Islamic State cell formed after the group’s territorial defeat in Iraq and Syria. Authorities stated the cell was planning attacks within Iran.

Iranian security forces reportedly located the cell’s hideout in the Bamo mountain region near the Iraqi border before any attacks could be carried out. During the operation that uncovered the hideout, several militants were killed and others were apprehended. Three members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard were also killed in the operation. The authorities also reported seizing weapons, ammunition, and other equipment.

Abdollahi and Palani were convicted of armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic. Their death sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court, according to the report. The judiciary did not specify the location of the executions.
