Inmates at HMP La Moye have contributed to the preservation of local hedgehogs by building 20 feeding and nesting boxes. The boxes, crafted from reclaimed pallet timber, were donated to the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group.

Dru Burdon of the hedgehog group expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that the boxes are directly contributing to saving hedgehog lives. Peter Gould, the prison's vocational manager, highlighted the rehabilitative aspect of the project. He stated that the skills acquired by the inmates in constructing the boxes could aid in their future employment prospects and foster a sense of community contribution, potentially reducing reoffending rates. "If it helps with carpentry skills training, so much the better, these boxes are certainly saving hedgehogs' lives," Burdon added.

A wildlife camera has captured a black and white photo of a hedgehog sheltering in a wooden nest box as it eats or drinks from a stainless steel bowl at night. There is grass and leaves all around it and the hedgehogs eyes are illuminated by the light from the camera.
