An encounter between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and a man in the Chicago area left an ICE agent seriously injured and the man, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Silverio Villegas‑Gonzalez, later dead, prompting a public dispute between ICE and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker over transparency and enforcement policy.

DHS said Villegas‑Gonzalez, whom it described as an immigrant in the country unlawfully with a final order of removal, resisted arrest during a traffic stop, attempted to flee and struck and dragged one ICE officer with his vehicle before the agent fired. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he later died. The officer was initially reported in critical condition and has since returned home, ICE said.

Gov. Pritzker said Monday he has requested more details from ICE about how the encounter unfolded and that the agency had provided "very little" information. "We need more information. We've asked ICE for all of the information around it. They have given very little," Pritzker said.

ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan pushed back against the governor's criticism on Fox & Friends, saying the agency is investigating the incident and accusing Illinois Democrats of siding with undocumented migrants at the expense of law enforcement. "They obviously continue to take the sides of these criminal illegal aliens who put our people in harm's way," Sheahan said on air. Sheahan also said anti‑ICE rhetoric has increased dangers for officers and that ICE will continue enforcement efforts with support from the White House and administration officials.

The confrontation occurred as ICE has expanded "Operation Midway Blitz," an effort aimed at arresting undocumented immigrants with criminal histories across Chicago and Illinois. The operation has drawn strong resistance from city and state officials, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who wrote on X earlier this month that "Chicago doesn't want to see reckless, unconstitutional, militarized immigration enforcement in our city." Pritzker has joined local leaders in questioning the operation's scope and constitutionality.

Sheahan said Villegas‑Gonzalez had a prior record that included reckless driving and a final order of removal, and that the encounter escalated when officers attempted to detain him. DHS and ICE have said the matter is under investigation by internal and external agencies; officials have not released a full timeline or body‑camera footage publicly as of Tuesday.

The dispute underscores tensions between federal immigration enforcement priorities and local officials who have opposed aggressive ICE actions in sanctuary jurisdictions. ICE officials argue coordination with local law enforcement is essential to public safety, while some city and state leaders contend certain federal operations are unconstitutional and harmful to community trust in policing.

Both ICE and Illinois officials said inquiries into the incident are ongoing. Federal and local investigators will review officers' conduct, use of force, and the circumstances leading to the shooting, and officials said they would release additional information as permitted by those investigations.
