New York City investigators were examining an empty school building in Queens on Tuesday after human remains were discovered inside its chimney. The NYPD responded to a 911 call around 9 a.m. at P.S./I.S. 113 Anthony J. Pranzo in Glendale after an exterminator working at the location reported a foul odor, according to police sources.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no identification of the remains had been made, nor had a cause of death been determined. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

The school was closed for the summer due to ongoing construction, and the city's Department of Education confirmed that no students were present in the building at the time of the discovery. The department stated that it is providing support to the school community while the NYPD conducts its investigation.
