House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is projected to win his bid for a fifth term in the House of Representatives, projected to secure nearly 60% of the vote, according to the Associated Press. His victory guarantees his return to Congress in January.

Johnson's district, Louisiana's 4th Congressional District, is considered safe Republican territory with a nonpartisan Cook Political Report rating of R-26. The district is anchored by Shreveport and Bossier City in the northwestern part of the state.

This year's congressional elections in Louisiana followed a modified schedule after Governor Jeff Landry postponed the primaries. This change allowed the state legislature more time to redraw congressional maps to favor Republicans. Instead of the typical spring primary and November general election, the top two candidates in each of the state's six House districts would advance to an early December runoff, unless one candidate secured over 50% of the vote.

Earlier this year, Louisiana's Republican majority saw a victory at the Supreme Court, which permitted the dissolution of the state's sole Black-majority district that had been drawn under the Voting Rights Act.

Johnson, who maintains a close relationship with former President Donald Trump, was widely expected to win easily due to his leadership position and substantial fundraising efforts. However, his electoral success does not automatically guarantee his continuation as Speaker if Republicans lose their majority nationwide. In such a scenario, Johnson would likely face pressure from within the House GOP conference to step aside, with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise considered potential contenders for the minority leader position.
