Former President Donald Trump has criticized some Republican candidates following the midterm elections, suggesting that the party would have secured a larger victory if he had been on the ballot. He also indicated a willingness to collaborate with Democrats, even as he signaled potential vetoes of legislation they might advance.

In posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump derided Greg Abbott, the Texas governor, stating that Abbott would not have lost his race to Democrat Gina Hinojosa if he had not become a "RINO" – an acronym for "Republican in Name Only" – in the past six months. Trump claimed that Abbott "went back to his original formula, and it wasn't pretty!"

Trump suggested that the Republican party's performance could have been significantly stronger, asserting on Truth Social that his party "would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" if he had been on the ballot. He also indicated he was distancing himself from some candidates, telling CBS News that "in some cases they [voters] didn't like the candidates, and in some cases those candidates were not my friend."

Despite his criticisms of fellow Republicans and his general predictions of legislative clashes, Trump also told The New York Times that he was "absolutely willing to accept" the election results and would "look forward to working with" the Democrats. He anticipated that Democrats would pass "insane" legislation, which he would veto. However, he added, "After a couple of months of vetoes, they'll call and they'll say, 'how do we get this stuff done?' And we'll work together."

Trump also expressed surprise at the election outcome in an interview with Fox News. He posted a photo on Truth Social of a red cap emblazoned with the word "VETO," seemingly referencing his power to block legislation in a divided Congress. He also criticized Fox News for dedicating significant coverage to Democrats, claiming the network's ratings were declining because they were "AGAINST me!"

Trump also lambasted former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, whom he called "the Worst Mayor" in the city's history and blamed for leaving the city "in disgrace."
