As Los Angeles voters headed to the polls Tuesday to decide their next mayor, Hollywood celebrities actively campaigned for their preferred candidates, Mayor Karen Bass and challenger Nithya Raman.
Actor and comedian George Lopez posted a video urging support for Bass, whom he likened to a relative offering comfort and sustenance. "She's gonna keep fighting for us, but también we have to fight for her," Lopez stated.
Other prominent figures endorsing Bass included Jane Fonda, Samuel L. Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Anthony Anderson, Cedric the Entertainer, Yvette Nicole Brown, Kym Whitley, D.L. Hughley, and Dustin Lance Black, according to the LA Times.
Fonda appeared in a video with Bass, describing the mayor as "a woman of the people" and highlighting her background as an organizer and activist.
Samuel L. Jackson, in a video released by Bass's campaign, criticized Raman's record on homelessness, stating, "Karen Bass walked toward it in one day. Her opponent chaired the city council’s housing and homelessness committee and canceled meetings on it."
Actor Anthony Anderson pointed to Bass's role in creating the California Film and Television Tax Credit as a key accomplishment.
On the opposing side, comedian Brennan Lee Mulligan garnered significant engagement with his endorsement of Raman. Mulligan, wearing an "I Voted" sticker, also voiced support for Marissa Roy for city attorney.
Raman's campaign received backing from a list of actors and comedians including Bob Odenkirk, Mindy Kaling, Adam Scott, Joel Kim Booster, Caleb Hearon, Poppy Liu, P.J. Byrne, Adam Conover, and Jaboukie Young-White.
