House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced his support for impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, stating he is a "hard yes" on the resolution. Jeffries, speaking on ABC's "This Week," asserted that Hegseth "has abused his power, undermined our national security, and engineered this reckless and costly war of choice in Iran."
He further claimed that Hegseth's actions "has skyrocketed prices on the American people and made the country less safe," adding "Pete Hegseth has got to go."
Jeffries indicated that House Democrats would convene to discuss the resolution on Tuesday. He expressed confidence in "incredibly strong support" among Democrats for the impeachment effort. "But I believe there will be incredibly strong support for that resolution," Jeffries said.
Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) intends to reintroduce a privileged resolution to impeach Hegseth as early as Monday. A privileged resolution requires a vote on the House floor within two legislative days. Massie's resolution includes eight articles of impeachment, accusing Hegseth of violating the War Powers Resolution of 1973, among other alleged offenses.
President Donald Trump has publicly defended Hegseth, calling his performance "fantastic" and stating his intention to keep him in his position. Hegseth himself addressed the impeachment articles in a social media video, dismissing them as "sham articles" and part of a "politics of personal destruction."
