Gulf War veteran Thomas Garrett Jr. has detailed his struggle with homelessness after undergoing heart surgery, a personal journey that has become a focal point for Fox Corporation and U.S.VETS' sixth annual "Make Camo Your Cause" campaign. The initiative, timed before Veterans Day, aims to raise awareness and support for ending homelessness among veterans.

Garrett described his homecoming after the Gulf War as a "phenomenal event." However, his life trajectory shifted dramatically after heart surgery, leading to homelessness. "So that changed everything about my dynamic in life," he stated.

U.S.VETS, a national nonprofit organization, provides essential services including housing, food, and career assistance to veterans in need. The organization reports assisting over 20,000 veterans and their families annually, with a cumulative record of over 500,000 meals served, 418,000 nights of shelter provided, and 3,000 veterans placed in permanent housing.

Quandrea Patterson, executive director of U.S.VETS, highlighted that Garrett's situation is representative of the broader challenges veterans face during their transition to civilian life. "A lot of times when veterans are in service, they're told, and they know exactly what to do because they're mission-focused," Patterson explained. "And then during that transition from active service to civilian service or veteran status, a lot of the information, a lot of the things to expect are unknown."

Patterson emphasized that this uncertainty can leave veterans vulnerable. For Garrett, U.S.VETS offered a crucial "square one" starting point, providing the structure and routine needed to rebuild his life. "It gives us good structure. It gives us a good routine to begin and to build from there," he said.

Ahead of Veterans Day, Patterson urged that honoring service members requires consistent action beyond annual observances. "Freedom isn’t free, and for the freedom that we're experiencing, that, there is somebody out there volunteering to put their life on the line and to navigate the unknown," she said. "When they get out, we should wrap our arms around them to make sure that they know that that service was appreciated in more than just words, but in deed as well."

The "Make Camo Your Cause" campaign, in which Fox is a founding media sponsor, seeks to bring visibility to veteran homelessness and encourage support for U.S.VETS' work. Donations and purchases through the campaign's online portal contribute directly to the organization's efforts.
