House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., has warned that Democrats would initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump immediately if they secure a majority in the House of Representatives following the November elections. Scalise stated that Democratic lawmakers are transparent about their intentions, suggesting they would "impeach the president day one."

House Democrats have impeached Trump twice when they previously held the majority, though neither effort resulted in a conviction by the Senate. While Democratic party leaders have not publicly called for a new impeachment push should they regain control, progressive members have introduced impeachment resolutions targeting both the president and members of his administration.

Scalise asserted that the Democratic establishment has not endorsed these impeachment efforts and even voted with Republicans to dismiss one such resolution on the House floor in June 2025. However, he argued that the influence of the far-left within the party is growing, particularly after recent primary elections saw socialist candidates unseat incumbent Democrats. Republicans, Scalise contended, are better aligned with the views of most Americans than these progressive lawmakers.

"These are tough members. And these are members who have been working with President Trump to make life more affordable for families all across America, running against socialists," Scalise said. He characterized the platform of some progressive groups as advocating for policies such as defunding prisons, which he described as "insane."

Scalise pointed to several competitive House races where he believes Republicans have an opportunity to gain seats, citing races in Maine, Texas, Ohio, and Florida as examples of areas where voters are rejecting what he termed "crazy extreme socialism on the left."

House Democrats' campaign arm was contacted for a response to Scalise's impeachment comments.President Donald Trump boards Air Force One on Aug. 9, 2026, at Morristown Airport in Morristown, New Jersey.
