Tyrone Tracy Jr., a running back entering his third season with the New York Giants, continues to face challenges in securing his place on the team. During the Giants' 26-3 preseason victory over the Miami Dolphins on August 22, 2026, Tracy experienced a crucial fumble that has intensified scrutiny on his performance.

While veteran Devin Singletary started at running back, Tracy entered the game on the second series. He gained 11 yards on his first carry and then made a 12-yard pickup on a cut to his left. However, on the Dolphins' 10-yard line, Tracy lost control of the ball without contact, resulting in a turnover. He was later seen on the sideline appearing visibly upset by the mistake.

This incident follows a preseason-opening loss to the Vikings where Tracy allegedly missed a blitz pickup, leading to a hit on quarterback Jaxson Dart. These performances come as the Giants have brought in new competition, including veteran running back Najee Harris, who was signed after recovering from Achilles surgery. Harris, a former four-time 1,000-yard rusher with the Steelers, is expected to have a significant role if healthy.

In contrast, Tracy, a 2024 fifth-round draft pick, has struggled to impress the new coaching staff. Over his first two seasons in 32 games, Tracy rushed for 839 and 740 yards respectively, surpassing 1,000 yards from scrimmage in both years. However, under new head coach Brian Harbaugh, the team is evaluating all roster spots.

While Singletary has had an impressive training camp, with Harbaugh noting, "Motor is a really good football player. He always has been. He’s had a great camp. You know exactly what he’s going to give you," the same confidence is not being expressed regarding Tracy.

Cam Skattebo appears to have a secure position on the roster. The team also saw contributions from other players during the preseason game. Quarterback Jaxson Dart did not play, having received sufficient work during earlier joint practices. Several offensive linemen, including Andrew Thomas, Jermaine Eluemunor, and rookie Sisi Mauigoa, also sat out. Projected starters in the secondary like Paulson Adebo and Greg Newsome II, along with safety Tyler Nubin, participated. However, key defensive players including Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux, DJ Reader, and linebackers Arvell Reese and Tremaine Edmunds did not play.

Jameis Winston threw a touchdown pass, and rookie kicker Dominic Zvada made field goals of 43 and 32 yards. Odell Beckham Jr. had two catches for 17 yards, and Darius Slayton recorded four receptions for 58 yards against a Dolphins defense that was also resting several starters.
