A freshman cheerleader, 19-year-old Giana Dettloff, was killed in a mass shooting at a Halloween house party in Bloomington, Illinois, on November 1. Dettloff was visiting a friend when gunfire erupted around 1:30 a.m. at a gathering of 150 to 200 people in a shared backyard. Police responded to reports of approximately ten gunshots.
Shooting Details
Authorities reported that Dettloff sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and pelvis and was pronounced dead at the scene. Eight other individuals, ranging in age from 16 to 22, were injured and transported to local hospitals for treatment. The Bloomington Police Department is investigating the incident and has made no arrests.
Police Chief Jamal Simington expressed condolences to Dettloff's family and friends, stating, "For a parent, sending a child off to college is filled with pride, hope, and excitement for the journey ahead. To have that journey cut short in such a tragic way is a parent's worst nightmare." The department has requested that community members review any potential evidence, such as home security footage or cell phone videos, to aid their investigation.
Victim's Background and Community Response
Dettloff was a student at North Central College in Naperville and a member of the college's cheerleading team. She had been involved in cheerleading for nearly 13 years and also served as a junior coach. A North Central College spokesperson described her as "a vibrant first-year student and beloved member of the North Central cheerleading team."
The Carol Stream Panthers Cheerleading, where Dettloff had coached, shared a statement on Facebook calling her "an incredible mentor, a wonderful friend, and someone who poured her heart and soul into the girls she coached."
Dettloff's cousin, Kyla Johnson, wrote on Facebook that Dettloff "was taken way too soon" and was "always like another little sister to me."
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established by the Dettloff family to cover memorial expenses and other hardships. As of Tuesday evening, the fundraiser had raised nearly $90,000 toward its $115,000 goal.
A public visitation is scheduled for November 5 at Glenbard North High School, with attendees encouraged to wear pink in Dettloff's memory.
