A pilot program launched in May across 37 schools in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, Wales, is designed to connect local authority fostering services directly with educational institutions. This initiative, spearheaded by Foster Wales, aims to improve the support systems for children in the care system, enabling them to thrive academically.
The program emphasizes the impact of a single supportive adult in a child's life, whether that individual is a teacher or another school staff member. Alistair Cope, head of Foster Wales, highlighted the positive impact of individuals like Sam Gardner, a former foster care recipient who shared his story, underscoring the importance of such mentorship.
Sketty Primary School in Swansea is participating in the pilot. Headteacher Simon Lloyd-Jones noted the school's existing strong care networks and stated that the initiative helps to highlight and strengthen the support provided to vulnerable learners. The program aims to ensure that looked-after children feel safe, valued, and empowered to succeed in their educational journeys.
