A former college swimmer from California is facing murder charges in connection with the death of a security guard at a Maui resort in early August. Legend Storer, 20, has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary involving a dangerous instrument, and indecent exposure.
Maui police responded to a condominium resort in Lahaina around 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 5, where surveillance footage showed an unclothed man approaching the office of security guard Michael Dyer, 63. The man allegedly assaulted Dyer before fleeing on foot. Hours later, at approximately 5:31 a.m., Dyer was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later identified the suspect in the resort assault as the same individual found wandering naked in a nearby neighborhood about an hour after the initial incident. Officers located Storer around 3:35 a.m. and took him to Maui Memorial Medical Center due to numerous abrasions he had sustained.
Storer pleaded not guilty to the charges on Aug. 7, and a judge ordered him held without bail. His attorney had requested nominal bail, which was denied.
Dyer was working the graveyard shift at the Sands of Kahana resort when he was killed. He and his wife had been married for 26 years, according to a GoFundMe created by his family.
Storer previously competed for Concordia University Irvine’s men’s swimming and diving team. His profile listed him as a freshman breaststroke and sprint swimmer for the 2024-25 roster and noted he graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2024. Hawaii News Now reported that Storer has since transferred from Concordia.
The investigation into Dyer's death is ongoing, according to the Maui Police Department.
