Firefighters from across the East of England have joined forces to combat a significant peatland fire, facing conditions described as some of the most challenging they have ever encountered. Brigades from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, and Essex have been mobilized to the scene.
The scale of the operation has put immense pressure on the service, leading to calls for additional crews from Merseyside to provide support. Fire chief Wayne Swales highlighted the demanding nature of the work, noting the significant commitment from full-time and on-call firefighters, as well as the impact on their families.
"This is a massive operation to keep going, and to keep people rested and relaxed as well as working really hard, and that keeps that machine going," Swales stated, commending the efforts of crews, support staff, and volunteers.
The fire, located at Holme Fen, has been likened to a "boil in the bag" scenario by one commander due to the intense and difficult conditions. The continuous efforts are crucial to managing the blaze and ensuring the well-being of the personnel involved in the sustained response.
