U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended a man and seized over $238,000 worth of fentanyl concealed within an electric moped at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on August 3. The discovery was made when a 22-year-old Mexican national attempted to enter the United States in a 2024 Revoo electric moped.

A nonintrusive imaging system alerted officers to an anomaly within the moped. A subsequent inspection, aided by a canine unit, revealed seven packages containing white fentanyl powder. The packages weighed a total of 16.53 pounds and were found hidden beneath the vehicle's rear seat.

In addition to the fentanyl, CBP officers confiscated the moped, a GPS tracker, and a cellphone. The driver of the moped was taken into custody and is facing federal charges for illegally importing narcotics into the U.S. The specific charges against him are pending.

San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin stated that smugglers are continually developing new methods to traffic illicit substances into the country. She added that CBP officers are leveraging their training, canine resources, and technology to counter these smuggling attempts.
