EU Chief Outlines Vision Amid Global Uncertainty

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined her priorities for the European Union's upcoming year, emphasizing closer ties with Canada, enhanced protection for children online, addressing climate change, and responding to Russia's ongoing war on Ukraine. The address was delivered to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance.

Von der Leyen's speech, modeled after the U.S. State of the Union addresses, also touched upon the future of artificial intelligence, recent drone incidents in EU territory, the conflict in the Middle East, and international trade tensions. This year's address comes at a time when the EU faces significant global shifts. Last year, von der Leyen spoke of Europe needing to assert its independence amid U.S. tariffs and criticism of the bloc's migration policies.

"Europe is in a fight," von der Leyen stated during the speech. "A fight for our values and our democracies."

Analysts note that the State of the European Union address has become an annual ritual, largely appreciated by EU insiders and often lacking specific details. Eric Maurice, an analyst at the European Policy Centre, cautioned against the speech being used to appease political groups or enhance the Commission President's profile. "The EU is facing the crumbling of all the premises on which it was built. The rules-based order with benevolent free-trade and U.S. friendship and support is disappearing," Maurice commented.

The European Commission, the EU's executive branch, is responsible for proposing laws across the 27 member states, ensuring compliance with existing regulations, and negotiating trade on behalf of its members. Von der Leyen, a former German defense minister, has gained significant influence during her tenure. Her leadership has been marked by securing COVID-19 vaccines, managing the energy crisis following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and rallying support for Ukraine. She has also navigated trade tensions with the United States, including limitations on damage from tariffs and addressing concerns over the commission's crackdown on Big Tech companies regarding data regulations.
