Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been moved out of the intensive care unit following an alleged shooting incident involving their son. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced the positive development on Wednesday, stating she is "doing great" and "making progress."
"She’s doing better and great from where she was. [She’s] out of the ICU unit and making progress, so we’re happy about that," Reid told reporters, according to ESPN. Bieniemy has been with his wife since the incident occurred on Sunday night.
Their son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond in Loudoun County, Virginia.
Deputies responded to a report of a shooting around 7:32 p.m. on Sunday and found an adult female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told WJLA that Mia Bieniemy was the one who called 911 after she had been shot.
Eric Bieniemy was at Chiefs training camp when the incident took place. Joe Bleymaier, the Chiefs’ passing game coordinator, has taken over Bieniemy's duties while he is away from the team. Reid emphasized that the focus is on supporting Bieniemy and his family during this difficult time. "I just want to make sure she’s taken care of — and Eric [Bieniemy III], too," Reid said, referring to the couple’s other son who has cerebral palsy. "[Eric Bieniemy’s] got the other part of that that he’s got to sort out. Let him take care of that."
