Elon Musk's substantial financial investment in Republican candidates during the midterm elections appears to have been unsuccessful, as Democrats secured victories in key House and Senate races.
Musk, identified as the world's richest person, funneled at least $445.7 million into GOP-aligned political action committees and candidates. His spending significantly increased in the final two months leading up to election day, with approximately $200 million of his contributions made during that period. This made him the largest single-cycle donor in modern US history, backing candidates through television commercials, digital ads, text messages, and mailers.
Musk's America PAC targeted 43 House and Senate races across the United States. Despite these efforts, Democrats reclaimed control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Following the election results, Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter), "Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time."
In Texas, Musk's America PAC reportedly spent over $33 million in an effort to elect Attorney General Ken Paxton to the Senate against Democrat James Talarico. An additional $168 million contribution was made to the Senate Leadership Fund, which supported Paxton's campaign. Musk also utilized his X platform to share campaign content with his over 200 million followers.
However, James Talarico ultimately defeated Ken Paxton, marking the first time a Democrat has been elected to the Texas Senate delegation in 38 years. Talarico acknowledged his win as a victory against billionaires and specifically mentioned Musk in his victory speech. Republican Governor Greg Abbott was also unseated by Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa in a notable upset.
Former President Donald Trump, who had endorsed Paxton, denied responsibility for the midterm election outcomes, suggesting instead that the results were due to the quality of Republican candidates. Trump stated that had he been on the ballot, Republicans would have won by a landslide.
