Dr. Philippa Kaye, a physician, is advising patients to consider discontinuing their use of heartburn and acid reflux medications due to potential long-term side effects.
These drugs, including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole and lansoprazole, are among the most widely used globally. However, accumulating evidence suggests that for some individuals, their prolonged use may lead to more harm than good. Around one in five Britons suffer from acid reflux, a condition where stomach acid leaks into the esophagus and throat, causing a burning sensation and chest pain.
In the UK, approximately ten million people regularly take omeprazole or similar drugs. These medications incur a significant cost, estimated at around £300 million annually for the National Health Service (NHS).
Dr. Kaye's recommendation comes as medical professionals increasingly scrutinize the potential adverse effects associated with the long-term use of these popular medications. While effective for managing symptoms, the growing body of research necessitates a closer examination of their overall impact on patient health.
