Finding accessible holiday accommodation remains a significant hurdle for disabled individuals and their families, according to recent reports.

Richard Douglas, who has a rare genetic condition, stated that discovering suitable places for a break in Northern Ireland has been difficult. His mother, Sharon Douglas, emphasized the importance of accessible holidays, not just for Richard, but for the entire family. "When we can go to a purpose-built accommodation that has all this equipment that Richard needs – it's amazing for Richard, but actually, it's amazing for the whole family that's caring for Richard," she said.

Douglas described the care for Richard as an "intense" and "demanding" 24-hour commitment at home. Accessible holidays offer a much-needed respite, providing a "glimpse of normality" and a change of scenery for the family. "It can be very intense, very demanding and we all spend a lot of time at home – so it just gives us all a lift to be able to go somewhere different - a change of scenery," Sharon Douglas explained.

A spokesperson for the Department for the Economy acknowledged that Tourism NI supports an "inclusive tourism sector by encouraging accommodation providers to consider the diverse needs of visitors." The department also noted that their consumer website allows guests to filter accommodations based on accessibility needs. However, it was clarified that while regulations outline minimum criteria for tourist accommodation, specific disability access requirements are not explicitly covered, falling under broader regulatory frameworks.

Sharon Douglas highlighted the relief and enjoyment that accessible accommodation provides. "The work with Richard goes on 24 hours a day – but it's just amazing to have that wee glimpse of normality - and be able to be away and enjoy a few days away from home," she stated.

The challenge underscores a broader issue within the tourism industry regarding the provision of adequate and specialized facilities for individuals with disabilities. Despite efforts to promote inclusivity, the practical availability of suitable options remains a significant barrier for many, impacting their ability to travel and experience breaks away from home.
