Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass., has indicated a readiness to issue subpoenas to technology executives following the Democratic Party's victories in the recent midterm elections, which secured them control of both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.
Responding to a social media post inquiring about televised trials for Big Tech executives, Markey stated, "They are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing." As the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship and a member of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Markey is poised to hold significant influence as Democrats prepare to be sworn in. He has previously positioned himself as a critic of Big Tech, releasing an "AI Accountability Agenda" in July aimed at reducing the power of technology companies.
Markey's comments suggest a potential wave of oversight and investigations targeting the technology sector. He has drawn parallels between the tech industry and oil companies, citing major tech corporations as obstacles to his climate agenda. He has also advocated for stricter regulations on data center construction, expressing concerns about their environmental impact.
Other Democrats have also signaled a similar intent. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., posted the single word "subpoenas" on X following the election results. Representative Robert Garcia, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, posted "LAWYER UP" on the platform.
