Manny Rutinel, a Democratic candidate vying for Colorado's 8th Congressional District, is confronting questions about his past activism against the meat industry as he campaigns in a region heavily dependent on ranching and dairy production.

The 8th Congressional District, often referred to as Colorado's "ranching capital," accounts for 26% of the state's beef cattle and dairy output. Approximately 75% of its 2.5 million acres are dedicated to farming and livestock.

Rutinel, a state legislator, has publicly re-evaluated his stance on ranching, stating in an interview last year that while he has spoken out against instances of extreme animal cruelty and unsustainable practices, he now recognizes ranchers as "good stewards of the land" and vital to the local economy.

"Colorado ranchers are my friends and neighbors, and I’ve gotten to know them," Rutinel said, adding that "like all industry, there are bad apples."

However, Rutinel's history includes significant advocacy for veganism and plant-based diets. As a 21-year-old, he promoted veganism at an Earth Day celebration and, during his time at Yale Law School, testified before the Connecticut legislature, advocating for a global shift away from animal products toward fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts, referencing the Planetary Health Diet.

Rutinel also expressed support for a proposed fur ban, calling it "really awesome," and initiated a petition for Popeyes to implement a plant-based menu, citing concerns about COVID-19 transmission risks in slaughterhouses. He also co-founded Climate Refarm, a group focused on helping institutions transition to plant-based food systems.

Critics have voiced strong opposition to Rutinel's past positions. A spokesperson for the Republican National Committee characterized him as "Meatless Manny" and suggested his views were out of step with the district's agricultural identity.

Rutinel, having won the Democratic primary, is set to face incumbent Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Colo., in the general election on November 3, 2026.
