A customer has reported finding what she believes to be fly eggs in a pre-packaged sushi box purchased from Lidl, leading to distress and concerns about potential maggot hatching. Megan Janes, 28, purchased the Raku salmon lovers 10-piece sushi box from a Lidl store in Wantage, Oxfordshire, on July 27.
Janes stated that after consuming approximately eight pieces of the sushi, she noticed a cluster of what appeared to be eggs. She described the discovery as "horrifying and shocking." Following her discovery, Janes stopped eating the sushi and kept the remainder as evidence. She claims that by the following morning, the suspected eggs had hatched into "baby" maggots, which she observed crawling on the fish and rice.
The incident has caused Janes significant anxiety, with her expressing fears about insects hatching and developing inside her body. She reported experiencing stomach cramps and an upset stomach in the days following the discovery. Janes indicated that she was instructed to stop eating the sushi immediately after her observation.
Following her complaint, Lidl issued Janes a £10 coupon for in-store redemption. A spokesperson for Lidl GB apologized, stating that the company's "high standards were not met" in this instance and acknowledged that damage to packaging can sometimes lead to product deterioration. Lidl confirmed that a refund and a goodwill gesture were issued to the customer.
Taiko Foods, the manufacturer of the Raku sushi range, asserted that they operate under "the highest standards of food safety and hygiene." The company stated it had fully investigated the matter and was satisfied that "there was no product contamination within the manufacturing process."
Despite the apology and coupon, Janes stated the experience has deterred her from shopping at Lidl in the future, as it was her primary grocery store. She advised other consumers to "definitely be careful" when purchasing similar products.
