Curator Cecilia Alemani Brings Cutting-Edge Art to New York's High Line
The art world veteran has transformed public spaces into accessible contemporary art venues, evidenced by popular installations like 'Dinosaur' and a Buddha sculpture crafted from artillery shells.
Cecilia Alemani, curator of High Line Art, has established the program as a prominent platform for contemporary art within a public New York City park. Her approach focuses on presenting cutting-edge work that remains accessible to a broad audience, including local residents and tourists.
In 2024, the High Line featured Iván Argote’s sculpture "Dinosaur," a large pigeon installation that garnered significant public attention. So popular was the piece that over 7,000 people signed a petition in December to prevent its removal, demonstrating a strong public connection to the artwork. Alemani noted that the sculpture resonated with many people as they "recognized themselves" in the common bird.
More recently, in April, the program unveiled its next commission: Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s 27-foot "Bamiyan Buddha." This striking piece is notable for its hands, which are constructed from melted artillery shells originating from Afghanistan. The sculpture draws a connection between artistic creation and the realities of conflict.
Beyond her work in New York City, Alemani has a notable international curatorial career. She organized the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022 and, the following year, curated the 12th Site Santa Fe International. For the latter, she expanded the exhibition's reach to an extensive 14 offsite locations, including a local cannabis dispensary, further pushing the boundaries of where and how art can be experienced.
