A vigil and balloon release were held in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, to honor Valentina Foster, a seven-year-old girl who died in a house fire on Wednesday. Her aunt, Natalie McDonald, 34, also perished in the blaze. Pink and lilac balloons, Valentina's favorite colors, were released by family members and local residents in a send-off for the young victim.
The fire is being investigated as a potential murder, with authorities exploring links to organized crime and gang violence. Four other individuals were injured in the fire: a 48-year-old woman remains in critical but stable condition, a 27-year-old man is receiving treatment, and two teenage girls were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Jaden Wright, 23, was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the house fire. He appeared in court in relation to separate offenses of grievous bodily harm and intentional strangulation from an incident the day before the fire. A 31-year-old man arrested earlier in connection with the deaths was released without charge, while detectives continue to question a second man.
Separately, Cleveland Police have arrested three men as part of a crackdown on organized crime in the Middlesbrough area. A 19-year-old and a 24-year-old were arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence following an incident where a vehicle was rammed. An 18-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving.
These arrests are part of a wider investigation following a period of violence in the region. Police stated that a total of 27 people have been arrested in connection with a fatal collision on the A66 that resulted in seven deaths, including two police officers. The house fire occurred days after this collision, during which cars were also set alight at a vigil for one of the crash victims.
Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox emphasized the police's commitment to pursuing those involved in serious and organized crime, stating that these arrests demonstrate their persistent focus on dismantling criminal gangs. He assured the public that investigations are ongoing around the clock and that information received from the public is being acted upon.
