The Washington Commanders and New York Giants ended their Week 11 matchup in a 27-27 tie after a series of late-game miscues by Washington, including a critical clock management error in overtime.
The Commanders held a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter before Jameis Winston led a rally for the Giants, forcing overtime. However, the tie became the primary storyline due to Washington's inability to close out the game.
With less than two minutes remaining in overtime and the Giants attempting to run out the clock, Giants player Cam Skattebo fumbled the ball, giving possession back to the Commanders near midfield. This turnover presented Washington with an opportunity to drive for a game-winning field goal.
Despite reaching the Giants' 24-yard line with 12 seconds left, the Commanders faced a second-and-8 situation. Quarterback Jayden Daniels scrambled for no gain on the ensuing play. Crucially, with no timeouts remaining, Washington was unable to spike the ball before time expired, effectively running out the clock on their own chance to win.
"The tie feels like a loss," said Commanders coach Dan Quinn, who took responsibility for the final sequence. "The sequencing of that does not fall on [Jayden]. ... That one's on me."
Skattebo acknowledged his role in the fumble, stating, "At the end of the day I have to take care of the ball. I gotta hold on to the ball and make sure these guys know that when my name’s called, we’re gonna be okay."
Daniels also accepted blame for the offensive miscues. "We gotta relay that as a offense, it starts from everybody top down. Ultimately, it’s on me."
Washington part-owner Magic Johnson expressed his dismay on social media, criticizing the team's clock management. "I’m in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today’s overtime game against the Giants. All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!"
This tie marks the second in three seasons for the Giants and Commanders. The result also meant no NFC East team secured a victory this week, as the Dallas Cowboys lost on Thursday and the Philadelphia Eagles fell earlier on Sunday.
