A Colorado man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, art teacher Lindsey Barnett. Patrick Theodore 'Ted' Barnett, 40, was taken into custody Thursday after calling Lakewood police to their home on South Welch Circle, where Lindsey's body was discovered.

Barnett told authorities he found his wife unresponsive in the shower with what appeared to be a cut throat, according to an arrest affidavit. First responders found Lindsey Barnett's body in the shower with a large gash on her neck and a knife nearby. Investigators noted a pool of blood on the couple's bed with a trail leading to the bathroom.

Barnett stated he last saw his wife between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. the previous night after an argument about dinner. He told police they had been experiencing relationship issues and sleeping in separate bedrooms, but were working on their marriage.

Lindsey Barnett's parents, however, have disputed claims that she was suffering from postpartum depression or was suicidal. Her mother told detectives that Lindsey was dedicated to her children and preparing to return to teach art at local elementary schools. She described the couple's nearly five-year marriage as troubled, citing Barnett's alleged anger issues, verbal abuse, and controlling behavior.

Investigators received a call from a woman who identified herself as Barnett's girlfriend, prompting a welfare check. The woman told police she met Barnett online three months prior and that he had led her to believe his wife was severely mentally ill and not living at home. She also claimed Barnett told her he was divorcing his wife.

When questioned about these claims, Barnett allegedly altered his story, stating his wife was aware of and accepted the extramarital relationship. Police noted unexplained injuries on Barnett, including a thumb wound and scratches on his arm and chest, which they suggested could be defensive wounds. He initially attributed the injuries to an ultimate frisbee tournament but later expressed uncertainty about how he sustained them. Dried blood was also observed on Barnett's neck and behind his ear, for which he provided no explanation. Investigators also noted unexplained bruises on Lindsey Barnett's body.

Barnett is currently being held without bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Thursday.

Lindsey Barnett was remembered by school officials for her passion for teaching art and dedication to students. Hutchinson Elementary Principal DeAnn Hoffman stated that the loss has deeply affected the school community, and support staff will be available for students and staff.
