Colin Kaepernick discussed his upbringing and his upcoming memoir, "The Perilous Fight," during a conversation with Jemele Hill in Detroit. Among the topics addressed was an anecdote from his book detailing how his mother encouraged him to date the singer Taylor Swift.

According to Kaepernick's account, his mother expressed a preference for him to be with a white woman, specifically suggesting Swift as a potential match. Kaepernick contrasted this with an earlier relationship he had with a Black girlfriend named Crystal, stating that his mother seemed to view Crystal as merely a "phase" while seeing Lindsay, the daughter of a friend and a white individual, as a more suitable partner. Kaepernick shared that his mother later told him he should ask out Swift, long before her relationship with Travis Kelce gained public attention.

During the discussion, Kaepernick also spoke about his adoptive parents, who he claimed did not fully understand or support his "blackness" or his national anthem protest. Hill, who co-hosted the event, focused the conversation on topics including racism and Kaepernick's potential return to the NFL, suggesting the Atlanta Falcons should consider signing him. The event reportedly did not allow for audience questions.
