The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) facilitates a clearing process, designed to connect students with university and college courses that still have available spaces. This system is accessible to students who do not meet the grade requirements for their conditional offers, receive no offers they wish to accept, or decide to apply for university after June 30. It also serves students who achieve higher grades than anticipated and wish to change their chosen institution.

Clearing opened on July 2 and will continue until October 19. Universities extend offers to prospective students based on their qualifications, grades, or the Ucas tariff points system. Each A-level grade corresponds to a specific number of Ucas points; for instance, an A* is valued at 56 points, while a D is worth 24 points.

Many students opt for alternative paths after secondary education, choosing to pursue apprenticeships or enter the workforce directly. Others decide to take a gap year to further consider their future educational or career choices.
