Japanese police have arrested a Chinese national suspected of carrying out a pepper spray attack earlier this year in an upscale Tokyo shopping district. The suspect is a 24-year-old Chinese student who lives in Osaka.
Tokyo police announced the arrest on Thursday, stating that they believe the student used pepper spray on a man in his 30s in May. The incident occurred at an ATM in a luxury shopping complex in Ginza. Nearly 30 people complained of throat pain and feeling unwell, with 25 individuals requiring hospitalization for mild symptoms.
The attack briefly caused chaos in the area, leading to the deployment of numerous fire engines and ambulances for first aid. The targeted man told police he did not know the suspect, according to Japanese media.
The suspect has reportedly told police he does not wish to discuss the incident. Authorities are also seeking another man seen in security footage speaking with the suspect shortly before the attack and then fleeing the scene.
