Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party secured victories in three special elections held Monday, a result that analysts suggest indicates voter support for Carney's firm stance against U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies and rhetoric.

The Liberal Party projected wins in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, Beaches-East York in Toronto, and North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, according to The Canadian Press. These results significantly bolster Carney's party in the House of Commons, increasing their seat count to 173 in the 343-seat chamber.

"At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government’s plan," Carney said in a statement following the projected wins. "This victory means we can maintain Canadian unity all across the country."

The victory in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec marked a notable shift, as the district had been held by the opposition Conservatives since 2018. The region, home to industries impacted by trade disputes, saw Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil projected to win by a significant margin. Daniel Béland, a political-science professor at McGill University, noted this Quebec result as particularly significant, suggesting it reflected public approval of Carney's decision to halt trade negotiations with the White House on Aug. 21.

The Conservative Party experienced a substantial decline in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, falling to approximately 13% of the vote compared to 34% in the previous year. "These numbers do look bad," Béland commented on the Conservative performance.

The other two seats, previously held by Liberals, were won by Braeden Caley, Carney's former deputy chief of staff, in North Vancouver-Capilano, and another Liberal candidate in Beaches-East York.

Relations between Canada and the United States have been strained since trade talks broke down on Aug. 21, leading to the U.S. imposing tariffs on Canadian goods. Canada responded with its own planned tariffs on U.S. products. Trump has intensified his public criticisms of Canada, including executive actions and public statements. Carney has concurrently pursued efforts to strengthen economic ties with Europe and other international partners.

The special elections were necessitated by the resignations of the previous Members of Parliament from these ridings earlier this year. Carney won the last general election on a platform that included reducing Canada's reliance on the U.S. and addressing public concerns over Trump's trade policies.
