Callum Turner, a leading contender to portray James Bond, has resigned as a director of Twentytwo Films Ltd, a company he established with his wife, pop star Dua Lipa. This move is being interpreted as a potential signal of his commitment to securing the coveted role of 007, a part that has been vacant since Daniel Craig's departure in 2021.
Turner, 36, founded Twentytwo Films Ltd with Lipa last August, with the aim of producing film and television projects. His resignation from the company, which he co-owned with equal shares, suggests a singular focus on the demanding Bond franchise.
Reports indicate that screen tests for the next James Bond have been taking place over the weekend at Bray Studios in Berkshire. Turner was reportedly present for his audition on Friday. A source told The Sun that "The role is all-consuming and commitment to it is a top priority of the producers." This process is said to be the culmination of a nearly decade-long search to find a successor to Daniel Craig.
Several actors have been considered for the role, with Turner, Jack Lowden, and Josh O’Connor, all 36, frequently mentioned as front-runners. The inclusion of Jacob Elordi, 29, has also been noted, though his nationality may be a point of contention for some fans who believe Bond should be played by a British actor.
Bond producer Amy Pascal indicated in August that casting would likely conclude by the end of the year. This timeline would allow for filming of the next installment to commence in 2027. Denis Villeneuve is attached to direct the project, with Amazon MGM Studios now controlling the franchise after acquiring Bray Studios in 2024.
Previously linked to the role were actors such as Harris Dickinson and Jack Barton. The official James Bond film series has a history of only six actors portraying the iconic spy: Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
