A kidnapping victim was shot and killed inside a car trunk by his captor, who then fired at police before being fatally wounded by officers in Chino Hills, California. The incident concluded Wednesday evening following a traffic stop that exposed the abduction.

Authorities responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive. Responding officers from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office heard screaming and located a Nissan vehicle they believed was connected to the incident. An attempted traffic stop led to a brief pursuit lasting nearly a mile before ending in a driveway on Wandering Ridge Drive.

Deputies ordered the two occupants out of the vehicle. The passenger complied and exited with his hands raised. The driver then exited the vehicle and fired a shot into the trunk, where the victim was held. The suspect also reportedly fired at deputies, who returned fire, killing the driver. The victim, who had been shot and placed in the trunk at the initial shooting location, was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

Authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public and no additional suspects are being sought. The motive for the kidnapping and shooting remains under investigation. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and suggested the victim may have been a homeowner targeted during an attempted break-in, though this has not been confirmed by officials.

A third man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody. Investigators are working to determine the connection between the individuals involved and the circumstances that led to the initial gunfire and abduction.

Both the victim and the driver, whose identities remain unknown, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third man, who was captured on video exiting the passenger side of the vehicle with his hands raised, has been taken into custody
