O'Brien's Markets, a family-run grocery chain that has served the Modesto, California area for nearly 50 years, will close its two remaining stores this fall. The company announced that the "current business climate" and the need for founder Chuck O’Brien to retire have led to the difficult decision.
The closure will result in 117 employees losing their jobs. The Dale Road location is slated to close no earlier than October 4, while the Roseburg location is expected to shut its doors by September 26, unless a potential outside party interested in purchasing and operating the store is successful.
Founded by Chuck O’Brien, the chain has been a local fixture, offering fresh produce, gourmet cheeses, deli sandwiches, bakery items, and alcohol. In a statement, the company acknowledged that it had witnessed significant changes in the grocery industry over its nearly five decades of operation, some within its control and others not.
Retail experts suggest that O'Brien's Markets' closure is indicative of broader challenges faced by small and traditional grocery stores. E-commerce giants like Amazon and large retailers such as Walmart are highly efficient and can offer consumers lower prices and greater convenience, making it difficult for smaller businesses to compete. According to retail expert Marty Bauer, modern consumers often prioritize maximum value, which includes a combination of price and convenience.
Lawyer Jonathan Lazarow, who has experience in the grocery sector, noted that scale has become a "survival requirement" for grocery stores. He pointed to the significant market share and sales figures of national chains like Walmart and Costco, highlighting their extensive purchasing power, technological investments, and supply-chain automation. While Lazarow believes that locally curated specialty grocers may continue to find success by offering unique experiences and quality, the competitive landscape poses significant hurdles for traditional neighborhood chains.
Loyal customers have expressed their disappointment on social media, with many lamenting the loss of a locally owned establishment and the personal connections forged within the store. O'Brien's Markets is currently holding a retirement sale, offering most products at a 25 percent discount.
