Brian Walshe, the Massachusetts man accused of killing and dismembering his wife, was stabbed inside a county jail Thursday evening, his lawyer and local authorities said, weeks before he is to face a murder trial.

The attack occurred just before 10 p.m. inside a housing unit at a correctional center in Dedham, the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The sheriff’s office did not identify Walshe as the victim, but his attorney, Larry Tipton, confirmed to MassLive that Walshe had been stabbed. Walshe was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for treatment and was returned to the jail overnight, the statement said. The incident is being investigated.

The sheriff’s office said officers subdued the other individual involved and recovered a makeshift blunt instrument. The office did not provide further details about the alleged assailant or what led to the confrontation. Law enforcement agencies typically investigate assaults in correctional settings to determine whether criminal charges or administrative actions are warranted.

Walshe is charged in the disappearance and alleged killing of his wife, Ana Walshe, who went missing on Jan. 1, 2023, and was reported missing several days later. Prosecutors allege he killed and dismembered Ana Walshe; her body has not been recovered. He is scheduled to go to trial in October.

Evidence introduced by prosecutors during pretrial proceedings has included surveillance footage and physical items investigators say are linked to the alleged crime. Authorities say Walshe was captured on Home Depot security video purchasing items including mops, brushes, splash-resistant goggles and a utility knife; prosecutors say those items were used to dispose of a body. Investigators also reported finding a hacksaw with a "small bone fragment" in a dumpster across the street from Walshe’s mother’s home. Prosecutors said searches about how to discard a body were made on an iPad belonging to one of the couple’s children in the days after Ana Walshe vanished.

Before her disappearance, Ana Walshe, a real estate professional and mother of three who worked in Washington, D.C., posted family photos on social media. Prosecutors have said the marriage was strained and that Brian Walshe had previously retained a private investigator because he suspected his wife of infidelity. At the time of her disappearance, Walshe had been under house arrest as part of pre-sentencing probation related to the sale of counterfeit Andy Warhol artworks, court records show.

Walshe was arrested and charged in connection with his wife's disappearance later in 2023. In court filings and pretrial hearings, both prosecutors and defense attorneys have focused on forensic evidence, witness accounts and the sequence of events in the days surrounding her disappearance. The upcoming trial is expected to address those elements in greater detail.

The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office said it will continue to review the incident and coordinate with investigators. Tipton, Walshe’s attorney, declined to comment beyond confirming that his client had been stabbed. Prosecutors and jail officials did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.

Assaults in jails can prompt separate criminal investigations and internal reviews; officials commonly examine surveillance video, interview inmates and staff, and assess whether additional security measures are needed. The stabbing adds a new layer to a case that has drawn extensive public attention and scrutiny since Ana Walshe’s disappearance more than two years ago.
