Sindri Eldon, the eldest son of Icelandic musician Björk, has spoken out about past statements he made regarding his songwriting talent. In a 2012 interview with The Reykjavík Grapevine, Eldon, then a musician and author, claimed he was a better songwriter and lyricist than 90 percent of Icelandic musicians, including his globally renowned mother.
These remarks resurfaced on social media nearly nine years later, in 2021, prompting widespread criticism. Eldon responded via a Twitter thread, attributing his past comments to a period of heavy drinking, a toxic relationship, and significant bitterness. He characterized the interview, conducted via email, as having a "tongue-in-cheek and jokey" intent that did not translate well in text.
"I was an asshole back then, drinking a lot and in a toxic relationship," Eldon wrote in his 2021 response. "I had a massive chip on my shoulder and didn't really know how to deal with it." He added that anger, self-loathing, and self-sabotage were struggles he contended with, and that while he admired his parents' apparent ease in their careers, he had not put in the necessary work himself.
Eldon emphasized that he no longer identifies with the person who made those statements, viewing him as a "titanic asshole." He acknowledged that his past comments were "douchy" but also suggested societal factors played a role.
Born on June 8, 1986, Sindri Eldon's parents, Björk and Þór Eldon, divorced when he was young. His upbringing involved extensive international travel due to his parents' careers in the music industry, leading him to feel more like a "citizen of the planet" than specifically Icelandic.
In his early music career, Eldon formed bands and recorded lo-fi demos, drawing inspiration from American indie rock, alternative rock, and power pop, rather than his mother's experimental electronic style. His musical output includes albums such as "Boring Indie Disco Party" (2005), "Come Thirty" (2013), and "Bitter and Resentful" (2016).
Despite the past controversy, Eldon has since collaborated with his mother. His vocals appear on the song "Ancestress" from Björk's 2022 album "Fossora," a track dedicated to the death of Björk's mother. Unlike his mother's distinct sound, Eldon's own music generally features guitar-driven rock with conventional song structures.
Björk also has a younger daughter, Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney, from her relationship with artist Matthew Barney. Ísadóra has pursued a career in modeling and acting, appearing in films and modeling for fashion brands.
