A barrister from West Yorkshire has been jailed for three years and three months for plotting a revenge attack with a client who was involved in serious criminal activity. Samreen Akhtar, 38, was found guilty of encouraging or assisting the commission of an indictable offence, specifically inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.
Akhtar had represented Tabish Ali, who had been shot and injured in Huddersfield on September 14, 2021. According to West Yorkshire Police, the day after Ali was shot, Akhtar was recorded on a phone call with him outlining a plan to locate the person responsible for the shooting with the intent to cause them serious injury. Akhtar was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Monday.
Police stated that Ali was affiliated with a drug gang and was subsequently charged with the murder of Jamal Nedd. Nedd was fatally shot outside his home in Huddersfield on December 19, 2020, while driving his mother to work. Ali was charged with Nedd's murder in 2021 and, along with two other men, was convicted and received a life sentence in July 2022.
