A Florida bakery's concern over a $3,100 order of cinnamon rolls that failed to reach its destination was resolved not by a theft, but by the delivery driver's apprehension by U.S. Border Patrol. The driver, Ivan Dario Rico Molano, a Colombian citizen, was taken into custody on suspicion of being in the United States without legal authorization.

Sunrise, Florida-based Roll & Dough hired an Uber courier on August 22 to transport approximately 350 cinnamon rolls to the Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood. When the order did not arrive, bakery owner Julie Pierre initially suspected the driver had stolen the merchandise and shared the concern on social media.

Sunrise police investigated the incident and determined that a theft had not occurred. "The investigation determined that a theft did not occur," Sunrise Police Officer Victor Fortune told Fox News Digital.

Instead, Border Patrol agents stopped the vehicle Molano was driving on southbound Interstate 95 before 9 a.m. on August 22. A records check had indicated the vehicle's registered owner was an immigrant without legal status. During the encounter, Molano admitted to being in the U.S. without authorization. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), he had entered the country legally in May 2021 but overstayed his authorized period.

Molano was taken to a Border Patrol station for processing. The cinnamon rolls remained in the vehicle. Fortune stated that Molano was permitted to arrange for someone else to take possession of the vehicle and its contents.

That individual subsequently contacted Sunrise police to coordinate the return of the items. On August 27, five days after the scheduled delivery, police recovered the cinnamon rolls and their containers and returned them to Pierre. However, the pastries were no longer fit for sale and had to be discarded.

"We're still out $3,100," Pierre told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "Stolen or not, we suffered a loss."

The bakery later issued a statement on Instagram apologizing for describing the incident as a theft before understanding all the circumstances. The statement also clarified that Pierre's report to the police did not lead to Molano's arrest.
