Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to announce an expansion of weekly payments for students undertaking practical placements, aiming to alleviate financial pressures. The reform, slated for announcement at the Labor Party's national conference in Adelaide, will make thousands more students eligible for the $338.60 weekly payment.

Starting in July 2027, the financial assistance will be extended to students in fields such as physiotherapy, clinical psychology, speech pathology, paramedicine, audiology, pharmacy, and podiatry. Previously, these payments were limited to students in nursing, midwifery, teaching, and social work.

The Prime Minister plans to frame this initiative as a key investment in Australia's health system and its workforce. "We are investing right across our world-class health system, and we are backing the extraordinary people who work in it," Albanese is expected to state at the conference.

The announcement comes as the Labor Party gathers for its triennial national conference, a meeting intended to solidify party policies. Treasurer Jim Chalmers acknowledged the volatile political landscape and the challenges posed by populist parties, noting that "politics is volatile." He added that the government understands "legitimate anxiety" among citizens facing economic pressures.

Discussions at the conference are also expected to address economic and energy issues. While the taxation of gas resources is on the agenda, Albanese has emphasized fuel security as a priority, stating that the government has prioritized and secured it. Chalmers pointed to previous adjustments to the petroleum resource rent tax as steps toward fairer taxation of natural resources.

Albanese intends to address voter frustrations with the political system by emphasizing the need for practical responses to genuine concerns, rather than solely emotional reactions. "People's genuine frustrations deserve a practical response, not just an emotional one," he is expected to say. He will argue against rhetoric that focuses on raging against the system without offering concrete solutions for national progress or individual economic stability.

While party members will agree on positions at the conference, the implementation of any new measures will ultimately rest with the parliamentary Labor team.
