Aston Villa's new sponsorship deal with the Rwandan tourist board has drawn criticism, with human rights organizations warning that the agreement will be utilized for "sportswashing" to deflect from the country's human rights record and its alleged role in regional conflict.

The multi-year agreement, valued at approximately $20 million annually, will see Visit Rwanda feature on the front of the men's, women's, and academy team jerseys, replacing the previous sponsor, Betano. Aston Villa has described the partnership as "the most important sponsorship deal in the history of the football club."

However, concerns have been raised by groups like Amnesty International UK. Felix Jakens, the organization's head of campaigns, stated that Rwanda has a history of using sports sponsorships to enhance its public relations while downplaying documented human rights abuses, including arbitrary detention, torture, and repression of free speech.

These concerns are amplified by ongoing accusations regarding Rwanda's involvement in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Last month, the DRC initiated proceedings against Rwanda at the International Court of Justice, alleging that Rwanda has violated international treaties by supporting armed groups operating within its territory. UN experts and Western governments have also implicated Rwanda in supporting the M23 rebel group, a significant armed faction active in eastern DRC.

Jakens emphasized that Rwanda's "sportswashing needs to be called out, and we'd like Aston Villa and the Premier League to play their part in this."

The sponsorship deal comes as Premier League clubs collectively decided to phase out gambling sponsorships from the front of matchday shirts by the end of the previous season. Francesco Calvo, Aston Villa's president of business operations, who joined the club last year, played a key role in negotiating the Visit Rwanda agreement.

Calvo expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, calling it "a symbol of the club's continuing expansion and growth into international markets." He added that the collaboration offers "a great range and depth of opportunities for collaboration, learning and innovation" with Visit Rwanda, aiming to foster advancements in tourism, investment, and sports development.
